Argus Coaching Tip for September 2001 Do you ever notice that certain situations - or aspects of your life - aren't as rewarding as you'd like them to be? I'd like to suggest that the role of values comes into play here. Here's a tip on a way you can look at those situations to see what, if any, changes you can make to experience greater satisfaction. Identify a situation where you're less than fulfilled. Maybe it's your job, maybe it's your weight, maybe it's the lack of time you have for yourself. Write down the values you hold that ARE being honored in that situation. In the case of your job, for example, you may see that your values of financial responsibility to your family, creativity, and prestige are being honored. Now, write down the values you hold that ARE NOT being honored. In the job example, perhaps your values of openness, humor, and respect are not being honored. What can you learn from this? By asking yourself which of these values are most important to you, you will probably quickly understand what's not working. If the values of openness and respect are of greater importance to you than those of creativity and prestige, for example, you can see what's missing. It's what's missing that keeps us dissatisfied. Here's another way to appreciate the value of your values: Recall a time when you were "on top of the world." Think about the values that were being honored at that time. You'll likely find that some of your most cherished values were being honored. It's not a coincidence that we feel most satisfied in situations that allow us to honor our values. Spend some time identifying and prioritizing your values. Then, try making decisions about how to spend your time, and your life, in ways that honor them. You'll lead a more satisfying life. Have a great month!
