Argus Coaching Tip for April 2002 Make a list of things you think you "should" be doing. You know, things like:
Where do your "shoulds" come from? Yourself? Your spouse? Your friends? Your colleagues? What makes each one a "should"? What makes it a "should" and not an "I can't wait to"? What is the benefit to you and/or others of completing each "should"? What do your "shoulds" have in common? My guess is that all, or most, of them can be followed by a "but," as in, "I should look for a new job, but I don't have a resume, I don't know what I want to do, etc." The next step is to write down what's stopping you from doing the things on your "should" list. Are there any common threads here? Time issues? Lack of information? Once you've looked over your list and considered what's stopping you, what do you notice? Which of these things support your goals and values? Which don't? If you find it difficult to work through this on your own, I can help you sort through it all to become clearer about your priorities. You'll live more happily if you don't have a list of "shoulds" weighing you down.
