Argus Coaching
Tip for November 2002

We each have a comfort zone within which we generally operate. What does that mean? It means that we are pretty much creatures of habit and tend to do things or take on projects, tasks, responsibilities that we feel confident we can perform well. And, that's great, as it gives us a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.

But, imagine what it would be like to take on something outside your comfort zone and succeed. Think of everything you would learn about yourself from that. Even if you don't succeed at the task itself, you will have succeeded at stretching beyond your usual limits and that, in and of itself, is a success.

This month, I suggest you consciously do at least one thing outside of your comfort zone. Of course, that will be different for everyone. Some possibilities:

  • Think about an opportunity at work that you've been reluctant to accept because you're just not sure that you can do it well. Talk to your manager about your concerns, ask for the support you need to do the job well, and take it on.

  • Contact a sibling you haven't communicated with in years. Don't be attached to the outcome.

  • Go to that business networking event at the local chamber of commerce and remember that no one else does what you do the way you do it.

  • Engage a stranger in conversation.

After you've moved outside your comfort zone, reflect on what it was like for you. What did you learn from it? Is it something you would do again? What would you do differently next time? How did people respond to you? There is a great deal of fodder for thought within ourselves when we take the time to look at it.

Have a great month!

With an eye on you,
